Congenital Heart Defects affects 1% of - or about 40,000 births each year. Making CHDs the most common birth defect. CHDs range from mild to critial variations.
Brooks was born with a moderate ventricular septal defect (VSD) (most common type of CHD) and an Interrupted aortic arch (IAA) (rare type of CHD). Both were caught at the 20 week pre-natal ultrasound. The early monitoring lead to a strong plan for the birth and surgerical intervention within the first week of life. We thank the doctors at Childrens of Wisconsin for their caution and care they took with Brooks' heart.
After a month of healing at Children's of Wisconsin, Brooks was discharged and has been healing every day since. He is now a happy and healthy baby, getting ready to crawl and continue to explore new things. That is all thanks to the medical advances made to correct and heal the many types of CHDs.
