July 15, 2021 - A Day I'll Never Forget
What started as a normal day quickly became one of the scariest moments of my life. I suddenly experienced extreme weakness on the left side of my body, slurred speech, a pounding headache, and intense nausea. Unable to walk without help, my mom called 9-1-1, and I was rushed to the hospital.
After four days in the hospital, a week in a rehab facility, and three months of physical and occupational therapy, I was finally able to return to work. At 36, the word "stroke" was the last thing I expected to hear from my doctors. But thanks to the incredible care I received from St. Elizabeth Physicians, St. Elizabeth Healthcare, my family, and friends, I was able to recover with minimal lasting effects.
I know how fortunate I am. Many stroke survivors face far greater challenges or, tragically, don't survive. That's why the Heart Mini is so meaningful to me. It raises awareness of stroke warning signs and symptoms, which can happen to anyone at any age.
I'm especially grateful for the support I had - from family and friends to my teammates and leadership at St. Elizabeth Physicians, who went above and beyond with compassion, encouragement, and prayers. But I know not everyone is as lucky. Some stroke survivors face barriers to care, transportation, and support.
That's why I'm participating in the Heart Mini. It's my way of giving back and helping other survivors get the resources they need for the best chance at recovery. Your donation supports lifesaving research and helps people live longer, healthier lives.
