On August 22, 2022 at our Anatomy Scan we were told that our little baby had a possible ASD and would be referred to Maternal Fetal Medicine for a closer look. 3 days later I had an ultrasound with MFM where I was told her small ASD was actually a little more serious of a defect. Haisley was diagnosed with an AVSD. An atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD) is a heart defect in which there are holes between the chambers of the right and left sides of the heart, and the valves that control the flow of blood between these chambers may not be formed correctly. I was told that our sweet 20 week old baby would potentially need life saving OHS immediately after birth and that we would potentially have to deliver at U of M because she wouldn’t survive the trip from Toledo to AA. I left that appointment scared and in tears for what the outcome of our baby was going to be. We were referred to a Pediatric Cardiologist for further testing and after a long month of waiting finally met with her. She was a breathe of fresh air and said she was very pleased with the anatomy of H’s heart defect. She did not think that we would have to deliver at U of M and have immediate surgery but could wait a year to a year and a half maybe even longer before surgery. She would, of course, need reevaluated once she was born but we felt a lot better after that appointment. The rest of my pregnancy was full of lots of Dr’s appts and monitoring and I tried my best to enjoy every part of the rest of my pregnancy. At 39 weeks Haisley was born via scheduled C section due to Breech and to make sure all the Dr’s were available in case anyone was needed. I was terrified something would go wrong but was very happy to hear her first cry and that she looked great! She was able to stay with us and be discharged with us. Haisley was officially diagnosed with a complete atrioventricular septal defect 2 weeks after birth. She has a large ASD and 2 small VSDs. Thankfully due to the size of the VSDs you would never know anything was wrong. We are so thankful that my OBGYN was able to spot the defect and she was able to get so much testing done in Utero. If not her defect would have went undetected.❤ As of now her surgery is planned for next Spring 2026.
