Our Story: Why We Walk
When I joined the American Heart Association 19 years ago, heart disease felt distant. Today, it’s deeply personal.
Mic, my father-in-law, survived two strokes. While his days aren’t quite as active now, he was given extra years to chase the biggest buck and out-fish us all—and believe me, he gave it his darndest.
My dad beat the widow maker—giving him more time with his wife and the chance to cheer on his ever-growing crew of grandkids, each one lighting up his world in their own way.
Before cancer took her, my grandma had a stent placed that gave us precious extra time with her spark, sass and firecracker spirit. She lived loud and with love, and we loved every minute.
And just this year, our best friend, Joe, survived two strokes caused by a hidden hole in his heart—he’s now watching his son play college golf, bracing for his daughter’s driving lessons and of course back on the course with his bestie Ryan.
These aren’t just stories. They’re years we might not have had—filled with more memories, more milestones and more time together—all made possible by research, awareness and medical breakthroughs fueled by the American Heart Association.
We walk for them. We walk for more moments. And yes, we walk with heart.
If you’re able, please consider a donation in honor of someone you love. Because every heartbeat counts—and every step helps.
