I walk because back in 2016 I was diagnosed with a rare heart disease "cor triatriatum sinistrum". I wasn't sure I would live to tell my story at the time. At the age of 24, I never thought my life would change so drastically.
I will always remember hearing the Doctors telling me, "In order to prevent this we will perform open heart surgery." That sentence alone has stuck with me for years to come.
I often would question, why me? Why do I have to go through this? Through prayer and the support of my family and friends, I've learned that if not me, then who else!
The day right before surgery I began to ask myself "what if I don't make it?" The what if's proceeded to weigh me down even more.
What if I don't see my mom or dad again?
What if I don't see my nieces and nephews grow up?
What if this is the final chapter of my life?
On the day of surgery, I was surrounded by love. Friends, and family all poured nothing but positive energy into me and my parents. As the nurse came to take my vitals, I remember telling my parents how much I loved them and that I would see them when I woke up.
I guess it's safe to say I woke up, and I'm a walking testimony!
Today I focus on my wellness and living a more intentional life. I know that with every step, I’m making a difference not only in my life but in others who share similar stories, and when combined with a million other Heart Walk Heroes across the nation, we have an even greater impact on curing heart disease and stroke.
