THIS IS MY WHY!
by Yvonne F. Milton
My Mother, Bernice Keahey-Barnett, was a phenomenal woman, who left such an impression on my life as well as my siblings. I am the youngest of her 11 children. When she passed away from complications with congestive heart failure one week after Thanksgiving in 2001, my family was heartbroken. Yet, in 2003, I chose to attach myself to a wonderful cause to keep her memory alive.
SHE IS WHY WE WALK.
This year June 2026 marks the 23rd consecutive year we have walked in honor of my mother's precious memory. It means more to me each year, as I have promised her, I would continue to lace up my gym shoes and carry her poster in my hand, walking in the Heart Walk as The Lord gives me strength to do so.
*Yes That's me! If You've participated in any Metro Detroit Heart Walks within the last 23 years, you've most likely seen the poster!! *From Southfield Municipal Complex, Ford Field, GM Building's River Walk to Wayne State University, Virtually in my own neighborhood, (all participants due to CO-VID restrictions)
Ford Field, Comerica Park,Wayne State University and this year's event at Belle Isle.
My Mother deserves to be celebrated for all the lives she has touched. Please Join me in supporting the American Heart Association in helping the fight against cardiovascular diseases, as well as strokes. When healthier choices are made daily, the quality of life is better.
I truly appreciate the support towards a worthy cause. Thank you for your donations.
