9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital die. In most of those cases, bystander CPR was not performed. But we can change this.
Why don’t we get medical attention when having a heart attack? Like me, we don’t recognize chest pain and left arm pain aren’t the only symptoms. In addition to chest pain, symptoms of a cardiac event can include pain the torso, neck, or head, shortness of breath excessive sweating, fatigue, nausea, feeling lightheaded or dizzy, inability to think, and heartburn. Secondly, people are reluctant to ask for help. When experiencing symptoms, they think, “give it a few minutes and it’ll just go away.”
Having experienced two heart attacks, I want people to be aware of the symptoms of a cardiac event and to urge them to ask for help if they experience symptoms.
It's time to unite, take action, and save lives. Every dollar donated, means more people trained in lifesaving CPR, more research and more lifesaving moments for everyone. Together, we can turn bystanders into lifesavers.
