Heart disease is often called the "silent killer," but for me, it has never been just a statistic - it has been a lifelong reality woven into my family's story and my own.

For more time than I care to recall, hypertension has been a familiar and unwelcome presence in my family. It has shaped conversations, influenced lifestyles, and, at times, stolen precious moments from those we love. Because of that history, I always knew I needed to be mindful of my health... but like so many women, I never imagined how personal this battle would become.

Then came the diagnosis that changed everything: cardiomyopathy. Shortly thereafter, I learned I had survived a silent stroke - an event that could have taken my life without warning. No dramatic symptoms. No flashing alarms. Just the quiet evidence that my heart and body had been fighting a battle I didn't even know was happening.

And if that were not sobering enough, doctors determined I was at risk for sudden cardiac death, leading to the implantation of an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) - a device that quite literally stands guard over my heartbeat every single day.

Let me be clear: I am here by the grace of God, the excellence of modern medicine, and the life-saving research championed by the American Heart Association.

That is my why.

I walk because I was given another chance at life.  I walk because too many women are unaware that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women, often presenting with subtle or atypical symptoms that are easy to dismiss.  I walk because awareness is not optional - it is lifesaving.  I walk because prevention is powerful.  And I walk because someone you love may be at risk and not even know it.

If there is one message I want every woman to hear, it is this: Do not ignore your body. Do not delay your checkups. Do not assume "it could never be me." Learn your numbers. Understand your family history. Advocate for your health. Ask questions. Seek answers.

Being proactive is not fear - it is wisdom.

Today, my heart beats with purpose. Every step I take in the Heart Walk is a declaration of gratitude for the life I still get to live and a commitment to help create a future where fewer families experience the heartbreak that heart disease can bring.
