2026 Washtenaw County Heart and Stroke Walk & 5K
Michigan Medicine Stroke Team
Every step I take in the American Heart Association Heart and Stroke Walk is for my patients, their families, and the countless individuals affected by stroke. As a Stroke Nurse Practitioner and the leader of a Stroke Support Group, I have witnessed firsthand the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of stroke survivors.
I walk for the patients I meet in the hospital, many of whom never expected their lives to change so suddenly. I walk for the families who become caregivers overnight, navigating an unfamiliar and overwhelming journey. I walk for those who cannot walk themselves-those whose strength, perseverance, and hope inspire me every day.
Leading a stroke support group has given me a deeper understanding of the challenges beyond the hospital walls. Recovery doesn't end at discharge; it is a lifelong journey filled with ups and downs. I have seen survivors regain independence, celebrate milestones, and lift each other up in ways that only someone who has been through it can truly understand.
But I also walk because I know we can do more. Stroke is the #5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S., yet so many strokes are preventable. Through awareness, education, and advocacy, we can help people recognize the warning signs, control risk factors, and ensure that everyone has access to life-saving treatment.
Walking in this event is my way of standing with my patients, my colleagues, and my community. It's a commitment to fighting stroke through prevention, support, and research-one step at a time.
This walk is more than just a fundraiser; it's a symbol of hope, progress, and the unwavering spirit of those affected by stroke. I invite you to join me-whether by walking, donating, or simply spreading awareness-because together, we can create a future where fewer lives are impacted by stroke.
