I walk in memory of my son, Steffan!
Steffan, with his twin, Cameron were born at 26 weeks. Steffan was only 2 pounds 1 ounce at birth and had many struggles to overcome including TAPVR. (TAPVR) Total anomalous pulmonary venous return is a congenital (present at birth) heart defect. Babies with this heart defect cannot supply enough oxygen-rich (red) blood to the body after birth. Without an additional heart defect that allows mixing of oxygen-poor (blue) and oxygen-rich (red) blood, such as an atrial septal defect, infants with TAPVR will have a mixture of oxygen-rich (red) and oxygen-poor (blue) blood circulating through the right heart and back to the lungs—a situation that is fatal. A heart surgery is required within the first few weeks after birth. The doctors needed Steffan to reach 5 pounds before operating on him, unfortunately he did not make it to that weight. My sweet baby passed away after living only 18 days.
