Dann’s Heart Story
I am profoundly grateful to share my heart journey with you. On August 29, 2026, I faced a life-threatening experience—a Widow Maker heart attack. Just a few days later, on September 2, I underwent quadruple bypass surgery, known as CABG, due to severe blockages in my arteries: 98% in the LAD artery and 95% in two others. Remarkably, I had no idea I was on the brink of such a serious event; my only symptom was a bit of indigestion, which I treated with a couple of Tums, believing everything was fine.
Every day, I went to work as if it were just another normal day. It was only by the grace of God, along with the skill and dedication of two incredible heart surgeons, Dr. Samuel R. Brown and Dr. Brett F. Duncan at UNMC, that I am here today. I am forever thankful to them and the countless nurses and assistants who played a vital role in my recovery.
The reality of my heart attack hit me while driving to school that Friday morning. I felt a tightness in my left elbow and immediately called my wife, who quickly responded by calling 911. When I arrived at school, I reached out to my wonderful front office secretaries, particularly Denise, who sprang into action and coordinated the help I needed. The support I received from my Principals, nurses, and friends—Melissa, Doug, Deb, and Taylor—was nothing short of amazing. They all worked together seamlessly, ensuring that I got the care I needed at the right moment.
I am deeply thankful for the love and support I received during this challenging time. It truly highlighted the importance of community and the incredible people who surround us.
