9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital die. In most of those cases, bystander CPR was not performed. But we can change this.
Cardiac arrests happen at work, in homes, on athletic fields and in neighborhoods everywhere, and the readiness of our community can be the difference between life and death.
This past fall our running group was struck by a terrible tragedy when one of our runners went down during the Indianapolis Marathon. Although CPR was administered right away, it was 45 minutes before paramedics or an IED could make it to him. Ultimately he lost his life that day. I take cardiac health and education very seriously, making sure we are all equipped to know how to save a life it a cardiac arrest does happen.
