In 2017, I found out I have heart disease—left ventricular hypertrophy. When I first heard the diagnosis, I did what I usually do when something makes me uncomfortable… I joked about it. For years people had told me I had “a bigger heart than most,” and now I finally had the medical proof.
Humor aside, it was a reminder not to take my health for granted. My condition could certainly be worse, but it made me more aware of the importance of paying attention to your body and making choices that protect your health, EVEN when a physician disregards your concerns because "you look to be in good shape"... It took me changing my PCP to get answers. Making this choice allowed me to get a diagnosis a week after leaving my PCP of 18 years to a more proactive physician.
I also want to use my experience to support and advocate for survivors and people living with heart disease. If sharing my story encourages even one person to get checked out, ask questions, or take their heart health seriously, then it’s worth it. â¤ï¸
