Every year, strokes claim lives and leave countless survivors facing permanent disabilities. On December 2, 2012, I became one of those survivors when I suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke.
Because stroke runs in my family, my husband recognized the warning signs immediately. He didn't hesitate. He called 911 and firmly told the dispatcher that I was having a stroke and that help was needed right away. Those were the last moments I remember before waking up in the hospital the next day.
His quick action gave me a second chance. Thanks to prompt medical treatment, I received medication that reversed many of the stroke's effects and helped me begin my recovery journey.
Today, I am stronger than ever. Over the past year, I have lost more than 60 pounds and completed two 5K walks. This September, I hope to run much of the Heart Walk in honor of the family members I lost to stroke and in celebration of the opportunity I was given to keep moving forward.
By supporting the American Heart Association through my Heart Walk fundraising efforts, you help fund lifesaving research, education, and programs that give more families the chance for a better outcome when every second counts.
Extraordinary starts with you. Please consider making a donation today and helping me reach my goal. Together, we can save lives—one heartbeat at a time.
