I was 16 when my Dad had his quadruple bypass surgery. Seeing him with a massive scar across his chest scared me to death. It wasn't until I turned 30 that I really started paying attention to my own heart health. Our family has the genetic predisposition of high cholesterol + diabetes, which means I need to keep a close eye on my numbers and see my doctor regularly. When I learned that both my older brothers had to go on statins for their high cholesterol (studies show that statins can reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, and even death from heart disease by up to 35%), I really started to take it seriously. It requires me to vigilant about my diet and stay active, and above all, know my numbers and listen to my body.
I am walking to help raise awareness for heart disease and prevention - and, in appreciation for the fact that I still have my dad in my life today, thanks to research and modern medicine.
Please consider joining me at the walk and making a donation in support of this important cause!
