The reason I am walking this year is personal. This year I had my biometric screening and my results showed that I have high cholesterol. I have never had high cholesterol, so this was an eye opener for me.
There has been a long family history of heart disease on my mother’s side, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise; however, I always thought I was a “healthy” person. I’ve had several extended family members who have died from heart attacks, and others who have had strokes. There is also a history of high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes, so some would say that the deck is stacked against me.
Now that I know I have high cholesterol, it’s even more important for me to lower my cholesterol and focus on living a healthier life. This year I’m walking for myself, for other family members who have died and for those who are currently living with heart disease. I walk in order to bring awareness and to educate them on the importance of eating healthy, going to the doctor for check-ups, being physically active, and simply knowing the warning signs.
Life is too short – and every day is an opportunity to make special moments. I walk to raise funds for science that helps us live longer, be healthier and make more moments possible.
It’s about coming together, honoring those survivors, raising lifesaving funds – and having fun along the way.
I hope you will join me and help cure heart disease and stroke.
Please help me reach my goal today!
