For years, I would tell my parents that my heart was beating really fast. It started to make me dizzy and I would have to sit down. Finally, one day my mom was able to catch my heart rate and it was beating 230 beats per minute. We rushed to Blank Hospital and after it was beating so fast for over 1 hour, they converted my heart back to a normal rhythm. I was diagnosed with Wolfe Parkinson White syndrome which is why my heart would go into an abnormal rhythm called SVT. I was placed on medicine to control it until I underwent a 4 hour surgery to burn the area causing the problem. At these heart appointments Dr Law would mention the chance I could go into a bad rhythm and how important it was that someone knew CPR and how to work an AED.
9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital die. In most of those cases, bystander CPR was not performed. But we can change this.
Cardiac arrests happen at work, in homes, on athletic fields and in neighborhoods everywhere, and the readiness of our community can be the difference between life and death.
It's time to unite, take action, and save lives. Every dollar donated, means more people trained in lifesaving CPR, more research and more lifesaving moments for everyone. Together, we can turn bystanders into lifesavers.
