Why We Walk
2020 Virtual Heart Mini (downtown event cancelled)
I'm a vocal supporer of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association in honor of my Dad. If not for the lifesavng research of the AHA/ASA, he never would have been in the center of this photo of my family. I ask you to join my 2020 Heart Mini "Habelize It" Team in the fight against the No. 1 killer (heart disease) and No. 1 disabler and No. 5 killer (stroke). The unfortunate odds are that your life and the lives of your family and friends literally depend on the research, education and advocacy of the AHA/ASA.
My AHA/ASA story started 28 years ago when my Dad had bypass surgery. Since that time he has had excellent cardiac care and a few other heart procedures. In fact, in mid-February 2020, at age 87, he had the Watchman device implanted in his heart. This amazing technology deploys a device in the heart to block off an area where many blood clots form. This procedure was necessitated to take my Dad off blood thinners because just four months ago he suffered a stroke. Both of these killers have come calling for my Dad but the AHA/ASA have allowed him to beat the odds.
The AHA/ASA has funded much of the research that has saved my Dad and allowed him to live to see me and my siblings get married and surround him with 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. When I was a kid and my Dad would come up with a creative but effective solution to a car or home repair he would laugh and tell me we "Habelized It." That's what we need to do to heart disease and stroke.
As the co-chair of last year's Heart Mini and a member of the Executive Leadership Team for the 2020 Heart Mini, I sincerely thank you for your generous and continued support. Please spread the word and tell your friends and family to register.
