Hey Friends,
Back in 2019 I witnessed someone lose their life in a cardiac emergency. He was young, vibrant, active and loved by so many. The loss left a big hole in the hearts of his family, friends, co-workers and workout buddies.
Three things have stuck with me after this tragic incident. I'd kept up my CPR certification for more than 20 years, but when an emergency happened, I panicked and froze. Thankfully, there were EMS and medical professionals who immediately responded with CPR, and I was able to assist as the 9-1-1 caller. The experience motivates me to not just certify in CPR, but to practice regularly and teach as many others as I can this lifesaving skill.
Second, being in his mid 40s, I'm not sure if heart health was on his radar. We're all busy and juggling our schedules. I've often wondered, "what if" the risk factors had been identified? It inspires me to make sure everyone knows thier risk factors, including blood pressure, cholesterol, genetics and blood sugar levels.
And lastly, thankfully there was an AED available, but in many situations there is 1) no AED, or 2) an AED that people don't know how to find or use.
Immediate CPR can increase survival rates from 10% - 30%. Immediate CPR and use of an AED can increase those survival rates from 50% - 80%. See what a difference we can make?
I can't go back in time, but I'm working with the American Heart Association to educate everyone to prevent heart disease and stroke, and to familiarize our entire communty with hands-only CPR so they know how to respond to save a life.
Thank you for supporting my team and the work we're doing here in Tarrant County.
I walk for Ricardo.
