More than 350,000 Americans per year experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. When they do, it’s usually at home. Their survival depends on bystanders (typically loved ones such as spouses or children) to step in, call emergency services, and begin CPR while help is on the way. Unfortunately, this usually does not happen. Currently 90% of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die, in part because they do not receive CPR more than half of the time.

CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.  And yet, so many die because those around them don’t feel empowered to intervene. In fact, 70% of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency.

We also know that heroes aren’t born. They are trained. Which is why the American Heart Association has set a goal of doubling the survival of cardiac arrest by 2030.
