This matters! Heart disease is still the #1 killer of humans, with stroke following closely at #5. And the crazy thing is that we can prevent almost 80% of strokes with simple preventative lifestyle changes.
Although I am very grateful to the American Heart Association for funding amazing scientific breakthroughs like the stent (developed right here in San Antonio), I am even more passionate about the work they do right here in our very own community to close health gaps and barriers preventing everyone equal access to quality healthcare.
I have watched these instructors teach hands-on CPR to children in schools and summer camps. I have been in the room as they report on their progress in creating Cardiac Emergency Response plans for businesses and organizations in San Antonio and surrounding counties. I've sat next to them as they awaited the results of their work to push through "smoke-free" legislation that keeps our kids' lungs safe. I celebrated with them as they installed free blood pressure monitoring stations all over the city, and I have spoken with San Antonio residents who live in food deserts as they shop for subsidized fresh produce that is brought into their neighborhoods.
Join me and together let's spread some good!
