Team OIC Heart Beats – Walking for Aleshia, Walking for All
At OIC, we know that health doesn’t take a break—not even during the busiest weeks of the year. Just ask our dear colleague, Aleshia Moore, who was working tirelessly the entire week leading up to our Black & White Ball last November. She smiled, she served, and she supported everyone around her—all while unknowingly having a massive heart attack.
Like many women, Aleshia didn’t feel the “classic” heart attack symptoms that we often hear about. She thought it was just bad heartburn. It wasn’t until the day after the Ball, when she couldn’t even hold down water, that she finally went to the hospital—where they told her just how serious things had been. Thankfully, she survived. But her story is a powerful reminder of how important heart health—and heart awareness—really are.
This is why we walk.
We walk to raise awareness that heart attacks don’t always look the same, especially in women. We walk because 9 out of 10 people who suffer a cardiac arrest outside the hospital die, often because bystander CPR was not performed. We walk because we want more people trained in CPR, more lifesaving research, and more survivors like Aleshia.
Cardiac arrests don’t wait for the “right” moment—they happen at home, at work, on athletic fields, and in neighborhoods everywhere. The readiness of our community—your readiness—can be the difference between life and death.
So we invite you—our staff, students, friends, and community—to join us in the Heart Walk on May 31st. Walk in honor of Aleshia. Walk for yourself. Walk for your family, for your neighbors, for those who didn’t survive, and for those who still can.
Every walker. Every dollar. Every step. It all matters. Let’s turn bystanders into lifesavers. Let’s walk to save lives. Let’s walk... together—to turn bystanders into lifesavers.
♀ Walk. Donate. Save lives.#HeartWalk #TeamOIC #WalkForAleshia
