When you donate to my Heart Walk page your donations will serve research funding and community health awareness programs throughout the entire US. My experience with the American Heart Association (AHA) includes being a science volunteer for the AHA for about 15 years. Then I was blessed to be hired as a Science and Medicine Advisor in our Science Department. A major priority for the AHA is raising funds to help fund research grants for researchers in cardiovascular disease and stroke. This is historical for the AHA and an important priority for the association. The AHA is the second leading funder of CV and Stroke research, only to the NIH. We fund clinical, population and basic science research. Just over half of funds raised to back to funding research. The AHA develops programs for the community at large to educate folks on many health conditions including: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, nutrition, lifestyle as it relates to disease and much more. We have programs for kids related to health including school relates activities and kids fundraising. A new initiative recently started is our Brain Health and Healthy Aging program. This program targets brain health over the age continuum, with education for the younger ages (prevention in the long-term) and programs keeping the brain healthy as we age. The AHA been vehicle for science and clinical professionals to gather and learn at our scientific meetings. These meetings offer researchers the opportunity to present their study results and for clinicians (physicians, nurses and other health professionals) to learn the latest state of the art and science information so they can care for patients in an up to date fashion.
I am walking in honor my Mother and Father who both had heart disease. My mother died from heart disease. I am also walking in honor of my years of working with stroke survivors and those who did not survive through executing clinical research studies at the Health Science Center at the Medical School.
