Hello there, my name is Shenequia Thomas. Born in August 1982, I was diagnosed with a very large ventricular septal defect on April 13, 1984. Ventricular septal defect is a hole in the wall that separates the lower chambers of your heart. When the hole is large enough, the amount of blood leaking beween the chambers can cause permanent damage to the heart and lungs and increase risk of infection.
The symptom that caught my parents attention was growth faltering. My parents were advised that if the VSD remained large and untreated, it would lead to various complications, some of which would have been irreversible. So they opted for me to have open heart surgery on April 29, 1984.
I walk to bring awareness and to save lives. Please help me reach my goal today.
