I Walk in Memory of my cousin Chong, and In Honor of my Mom
As a TTU graduate I did my senior internship with the Lubbock American Heart Association. At the time, I didn't know anything about the mission or the organization. Then I was given the opportunity to work for the AHA in 1998. It was my first real job after graduating. I worked six wonderful years for the organization throughout the state of Texas. I met so many wonderful people, volunteers, survivors.....it was a wonderful time of my life.
I never knew of anyone personally who was affected by heart disease or stroke until...
In 2002, my cousin Chong passed away after experiencing a massive heart attack at the age of 35. Chong was a runner. With Asian decent, my Asian side of my family carries a number of hereditary risk factors. Needless to say, when he left his wife and two kids that morning for a run, I don't think anyone had the idea that he wasn't going to return home again.
In 2008, my mother experienced a stroke. Thankfully she experienced what doctors say was a "mild" stroke. My family is so grateful that we were given a second chance with her.
In 2022, I returned back to the Association. This is my second go around with the AHA and I am so happy to be back! I get the wonderful opportunity to work with major corporations and organizations by showing them the multitude of ways they can make an impact in our community and save lives. But I am not alone...my husband, Aaron, works every day in pediatric hearts in the OR. We are what you call a HEART FAMILY!
