Endulge me for just a hot minute! I am officially in my 40th year of being a nurse. I have had the opportunity, as a nurse and nurse practitioner, to see so much evolve in improving stroke care in our communities. We have gone from being powerless as we would watch patients deficits evolve and attempt to rehab them, to being able to intervene and give them the best opportunity for the best outcome. These advances are results of research, operationalization of strategies, and community engagement. CHANGING LIVES!
So many friends and family have been affected by heart disease and stroke! As always, I am walking in honor of my dad, John Dougherty, Sr, who suffered a stroke that seriously impacted his quality of life and my mother-in-law, Edith Luciano who died from heart failure. I am also walking for the many stroke survivors that I have worked with over the years. They have inspired me to do what I can as a provider to improve the care of stroke patients throughout our country and beyond.
