Our team is walking to spread the word to pay attention to your genetics, heart health and all others, and be an aggressive advocate for yourself when it comes to health!
Team leader Tommy, aka “Quadman” is a survivor of a quad bypass at age 60. His cholesterol numbers were great, he worked out 3 times a week and eats a heart-healthy diet. Yet he has a genetic marker called Lp(a) that was clogging his arteries up since his 30’s. No symptoms! No rationale reason to think he might be 90% to 95% blocked in ALL FOUR cardiac arteries!!!
While chasing causes for his high blood pressure, he and his cardiologist decided an office stress-test might give some ideas. Tommy’s EKG showed a “low T-wave” that likely indicated a blockage or 2. A catheter inspection showed ALL FOUR cardiac arteries blocked well into the 90% range. Hello quadruple Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CAGB)!
Tommy saved his life by advocating for a stress test even though it is not a test typically associated with hypertension. And now he is saving the life of his son, who inherited Tommy’s genetic Lp(a) and is already seeing a cardiologist.
Health advocacy and knowing your genetics saves lives!!!
