I Walk to Save Lives!

On January 24th, 2022, at the age of 34, I experienced water retention issues and was advised to go to the emergency room.  Upon being weighed, I reached my heaviest weight of 276 lbs., leading tghe doctor to inquire avout any previous heart problems.  During middle school, I was prescribed heart medication.  My doctor at Valley Children's Hospital in Madera later told me that I could see my regular physician.  While undergoing treatment at Doctor's Medical Center in Modesto, CA, my physician recommended that I extend my stay by three days to complete further examinations.

It was during this period that a Cardiologist confirmed my diagnosis of Congestive Heart Failure and shared that my current heart rate stood at 10%.  He provided me with information and brochures and informed me that I have an incurable condition requiring lifetime medication and Cardiologist vists.  During my hospital visit, I collaborated with a nutritionist to modify my eating habits.  Initially feeling hungry upon waking up and going to bed, but ultimately consuming fewer calories while maintaining an increased frequency of meals throughout the day.  After visiting my Cardiologist a few times, they advised me to go on light duty.  Unfortunately, I couldn't lift anything and my job wouldn't accommodate this request so I was let go.

After being confined at home without much physical activity for a year, I desired to enhance my well-being.  Hence, I proceeded to purchase a Fitbit from Costco and joined the fitness application called 'Bodi', wherein I sought permission to commence working out.  I was advised not to overexert myself and to search for healthy food recipes.  After shedding 104 pounds over the past two years, I've managed to keep my weight loss consistent by adhering to an active lifestyle that includes exercises for five consecutive days per week along with making sure what goes into my body via food intake.

For the first time in years, I acutally have confidence - something I thought was impossible.  This unexpected blessing has helped me turn my life around.  My heart rate currently falls within the range of 55-60%, two years after the inital measurement.  My story is one of triumph over adversity, and I hope it will resonate with those going through comparable experiences.  As someone identified as a 'Heart Survivor' since January 2022, supporting initiatives such as 'Heart Health' has become personal for me .
