Currently Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease related conditions are the leading cause of death. ASCVD develops when there is plaque buildup within the arteries and this causes the blood flow to be limited, which can cause a heart attack when the plaque narrowing an artery can cause a blood clot which creates blockage in the arteries for the heart or the plaque can break off and cause a blockage in the artery which reduces/prevents blood flow to the heart.
The risk of ASCVD can be reduced by having regular appts./annual physicals including blood work with your doctor as well as living a healthy lifestyle by:
- Eating heart-healthy foods
- Limiting sugary drinks and full fat dairy
- Exercising regularly
- Eliminating tobacco and alcohol use
- Maintaining a healthy weight
High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes also puts you at a higher risk of ASCVD so it is important to manage these health conditions regularly with your doctor.
Know the symptoms and call 911 if you or someone around you has one or more of the symptoms:
- Pain or discomfort in the chest, jaw, neck or back
- Pain or discomfort in the arms or shoulders
- Shortness of breath
- Unexplained tiredness, lightheaded or faint
- Nausea or vomiting.
Silent heart attacks may show subtle symptoms such as:
- Unexplained fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Discomfort in the throat, neck, jaw, or arm
- Chest pain that may be mild and mistaken for heartburn.
The sooner treatment begins the higher chance that damage to the heart can be minimized which gives a greater chance to survive. Those who are diagnosed with ASCVD (even if they have had a heart attack), can usually return to a pretty normal life and live many more years.
I am walking in the Heart Walk to honor my dad, and to raise money to help provide education that can help someone and could even save a life. I appreciate all of the support to help me reach my goal.
