I walk for 2 reasons. First, in memory of my father, who was a heart disease survivor for many years, after a successful triple bypass surgery when he was 40. Because heart disease runs in the family and his grandfather died of a heart attack, he was certain he wouldn’t live beyond 50. He proved he was a fighter and went on to live to 69. Second, I walk to support continued research and advancements, which is making it possible for my ex-husband to live a longer life with significant less risk of a heart attack from his aortic aneurysm. Last year, he bravely underwent open heart surgery to have a mechanical heart valve implanted. Advancements in technology have made it possible for so many to live longer lives with existing heart conditions. These advancements heavily rely on programs funded by private donations.
