21 years ago, our lives were forever changed when our youngest was diagnosed with a major heart defect that required open heart surgery as a newborn. Many years later, after his second surgery, he is now a thriving college student in mechanical engineering. 

 

His quality of life and amazing outcome would not be possible without ongoing medical research. As an adult, his focus, like all of us, is how to be heart healthy with regular physical activity and a well balanced diet.

 

In addition, for women that have reached menopause, we no longer have the level of estrogen that has otherwise protected us from having heart disease earlier in our lives. Increasing our physical activity is more important now than ever, in addition to maintaining strong bones.
