Life is Why! Join me in supporting the American Heart Association!
Heart disease and stroke has affected many of my family members, so this event means so much to me.
I knew I was overweight. I struggled with my weight for most of my life. I had high blood pressure and borderline high cholesterol. I had high inflammation markers and I wasn't exercising regularly. All these items are risk factors for heart disease and stroke.
In early 2020, as part of the transition into working from home, my employer offered regularly scheduled meditation sessions. This was something I had never done before, so I thought it was a great opportunity to try it out. I truly feel this was the beginning of my health journey. Meditation allowed me to focus inward and helped me to envision taking control of my wellbeing. Being at home provided a great opportunity for me to focus on the things I could control to minimize my risks of heart disease and stroke.
I have established good habits which help my body to be in optimal health. I am enjoying a plant-based diet full of wonderful foods I had not tried before. My exercise routine includes practicing yoga and walking around my neighborhood. I continue to practice meditation and find it is an excellent way to start my day.
I am down 25 pounds and no longer need blood pressure medication which I was on for 10+ years.
I have learned that it is totally worth the effort to make a change. I took advantage of the available resources to help me achieve my health goals and continue to be truly grateful for my health.
I walk because I know that with every step, I'm making a difference in someone's life. And when combined with a million other Heart Walk Heroes across the nation, we have an even greater impact toward curing heart disease and stroke. Will you be a Heart Walk Hero with me?
