My mom, Elena San Jose, was only 39 when she had a major stroke.
One day everything was normal—and the next, she couldn’t remember our names. The right side of her body was paralyzed, and she had to relearn how to speak, write, and take care of herself.
We didn’t know she had heart disease until it was too late.
My sisters and I had to grow up fast to help take care of her. We were just kids, but we did everything we could to help her recover.
Her doctor told her she needed heart surgery to live longer, but she was afraid—not for herself, but for us. She didn’t want to risk leaving her children behind.
Even after being told she might only live a year, she kept going.
That’s who my mom was.
A fighter.
She worked two jobs to raise us. She pushed herself through recovery. She even drove an hour to work when doctors said she never would.
She showed us what strength really looks like.
I wish she never had heart disease. I wish she never had that stroke. I wish she was still here with us.
We love her so much.
I’m walking in her honor.
