In late 2019, after relocating my family from the Bay Area to Henderson, Nevada, for retirement, a routine doctor's visit changed everything. What began as a simple recommendation to see a cardiologist set me on an unimaginable journey, one that would ultimately lead to a heart transplant.
Over the next several years, my heart condition required critical interventions. In 2020, I received an implanted defibrillator, and in January 2024, I underwent a double bypass surgery. As my condition progressed, my family made the difficult decision to sell our home in Henderson and return to the Bay Area so I could receive specialized cardiac care from my cardiologist and the transplant team at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, California. Then, on January 14, 2025, I received the ultimate gift of life: a new heart.
The road to recovery has demanded physical endurance, emotional resilience, and spiritual growth. From taking my first steps in cardiac rehabilitation to maintaining a daily commitment to an hour of cardio exercise, every day has been an opportunity to reclaim my health and embrace the gift I was given.
I am profoundly grateful to my wife, Ivy, my partner of 17 years. She carried the tremendous responsibilities of caring for our family, supporting our two teenage sons, managing my evolving diet and medication regimen, and coordinating communication with my transplant teams, all while facing the uncertainty and fear that accompanied my declining heart health. While I was fighting for my life, Ivy was fighting for our family, carrying burdens that often went unseen while never letting me lose hope. Her strength, sacrifice, and unwavering support made my recovery possible.
Today, I am not just surviving. I am thriving.
This journey has taught me that faith, family, determination, and an incredible community can carry us through even the most difficult challenges. My story is living proof that hope remains possible even in the darkest moments, and that extraordinary new beginnings can emerge from life's greatest trials.
On January 14, 2025, I was given a second chance at life. Every heartbeat since then has been a reminder to live with gratitude, purpose, and hope.
