I am looking forward to participating in my first Alaska Heart Walk to raise funds for the American Heart Association! What makes it even better, is walking with other dental professionals to raise awareness about heart disease and why we care so much about our community recieving regular dental care.
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally, and 9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital don’t survive. There is a growing body of literature that connects periodontal (gum) disease and cardiovascular disease. When there is a lack of dental care and poor oral hygiene, pathogenic bacteria enter the bloodstream and trigger chronic systemic inflammation that can damage arteries and organs such as the heart. As a dental hygienist, I am committed to ensuring gum disease is properly treated and that patients are educated about what they can do at home to improve their oral health. Yes, that includes flossing! Why? Because it removes the sticky plaque that adheres to the tooth (both below and above the gumline). Dental hygienists do realize that not everyone is able to floss though. There are several great alternatives--ask your dental hygienist!
