I walk in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk for a very personal reason. As a dental hygienist, I understand the important connection between oral health and overall health. As an individual, I have also seen the impact of heart disease within my own family. My uncle has experienced the challenges of heart disease, including a heart transplant and living with an LVAD. His journey has made the importance of heart health very real to me.
As a dental hygienists, I see firsthand how oral inflammation and periodontal disease can affect the body. The American Heart Association recognizes an association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, including potential pathways involving oral bacteria and systemic inflammation. A healthy mouth is one part of caring for a healthy body.
I walk to honor my uncle, to support the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association, and to represent my profession's commitment to prevention and whole-person health.
I walk for the people I love. I walk for my patients. I walk for healthier hearts and healthier smiles. And I walk because every step can help save a life.
