2026 Alaska Heart Run & Walk
Floss With Heart
The dental professionals of the Cook Inlet Dental Hygienists' Association and the Alaska Dental Society are passionate about prevention and improving health across our communities. We are proud to support the American Heart Association Heart Walk and raise awareness of the connection between oral and heart health.
As dental professionals, we understand that oral health is an important part of whole-body health. When oral plaque is not adequately controlled, it can contribute to gingivitis and periodontal disease. Inflamed periodontal tissues may allow oral bacteria and inflammatory products to enter the bloodstream, contributing to inflammation throughout the body.
Heart disease involves the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque within arteries. Research shows an association between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, with inflammation and oral bacteria being potential pathways connecting the oral environment with vascular health. While gum disease has not been proven to directly cause heart disease, the connection reinforces the importance of caring for the mouth as part of caring for the whole body.
