My mom's side of the family has suffered several health issues related to heart defects. My grandfather's dimensia was caused by several mini-strokes that were the result of a congenital heart defect. After discovering she had the same heart defect, my mom had surgery to replace her faulty valve with a donor's to avoid the same thing happening to her. I was her primary caregiver following surgery and with that came a lot of education about heart health and warning signs to look out for. I am so grateful I was able to be there for her and had the knowledge to provide life-saving measures if needed.
