My Heart Journey: Walking for Hope, Health, and Those We Love
In 2015, I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure (CHF), with my heart functioning at only 30%. From that moment, I knew I had a battle ahead of me. Over the years, I worked hard to maintain a heart-healthy lifestyle, but if I am being honest, I wasn’t always motivated enough to push myself to make the changes I truly needed.
In 2023, I lost my father, and then last year, I experienced the devastating loss of my older brother, who passed away from cardiac arrest at only 45 years old. Losing him was a wake-up call that changed my perspective on my own health. I realized I couldn’t take my heart or my life for granted.
Since July 4th of last year, I have committed myself to becoming healthier. Through dedication to nutrition, exercise, and a healthier lifestyle, I have lost over 100 pounds. Even more importantly, my heart function has improved — my cardiac output has increased from 30% to 59%.
While I am incredibly proud of how far I have come, my journey has reminded me that heart disease is something we must continue to fight. Just one month ago, I experienced an atrial fibrillation (AFib) episode that required electrical cardioversion. That moment reminded me that even with progress, my heart remains vulnerable — and that taking care of it is a lifelong commitment.
Despite the challenges I have faced, I refuse to give up. I will continue fighting for a healthier, happier life, and I hope my journey can inspire others who are facing their own health challenges.
I am participating in the American Heart Association Walk because I believe in the power of community. We all need people around us who understand, support, and share their experiences through the highs and lows of life. We are stronger when we walk together.
I am walking for myself and my health. I am walking in memory of my father and my brother, whose lives were impacted by heart disease. I am walking alongside my amazing co-workers who have supported me throughout this journey.
Please help me raise funds to support the American Heart Association and their mission to fight heart disease, improve lives, and give hope to families like mine.
Together, we can keep hearts beating and help others continue their own journey toward a healthier future.
