Why I Walk
In a heartbeat, you could be the difference.
Heart disease has touched many of us in a very personal way—whether through family, friends, or coworkers. For me, it has been all of those.
My family's life changed forever on February 15, 2010, when my dad suffered a massive heart attack. We were told it was nothing short of a miracle that he survived. One artery was 100% blocked and another was 98% blocked. He required three stents, and his diet and lifestyle had to change dramatically.
That experience changed our entire family's perspective. We realized just how precious life is and how quickly everything can change. Thanks to advances in research, treatment, and education—made possible by organizations like the American Heart Association—my dad was given a second chance.
Those additional years were a true gift to our family. We made memories that we otherwise may never have had. While we sadly lost my dad to lung cancer in January 2025, I remain deeply grateful for the extra time we were given with him.
I continue to support the American Heart Association because I know firsthand that research, education, and awareness save lives. Every dollar raised helps fund lifesaving research, trains more people in CPR, and creates hope for families facing heart disease and stroke.
I would like to thank everyone who has supported me throughout my Heart Walk journey. For more than 13 years, I have proudly participated in the Anchorage Heart Walk, and I am honored to continue walking in support of this important cause.
Extraordinary things happen when people take action. A small step. A simple skill. A lifesaving moment. Heart Walk brings communities together to create health and hope for every heartbeat.
Every walker who joins and every dollar donated helps create more survivors, more breakthroughs, and more lifesaving moments.
Extraordinary starts with YOU. Please help me reach my goal today!
With heartfelt gratitude,
Dawn McQuay
