I am involved with the American Heart Association Walk and fundraising efforts for several reasons that hit close to home. Both of my grandfathers, Everett and Leslie (yes, I was lucky enough be named after him), my grandmother Mary and my mother-in-law Jeaneath suffered/suffer from heart disease. It runs in my family and I know how it can show itself out of nowhere. With it in my DNA, I want to be proactive in taking care of myself and demonstrating care and consideration for my health so my two daughters, Lovella and Lillian, learn healthy habits and hopefully continue them on in their own lives as they grow up. All of my grandparents have since passed and I know how difficult it can be watching loved ones suffer – I certainly don’t want my children to have to witness that with me if I can prevent it. It’s also alarming to know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, 299,578 women in 2017 0 about 1 in every 5 female deaths. It’s easier said than done sometimes, but all the little things add up to have a big impact. For me, it’s turning on Zumba Kids YouTube videos and dancing around silly with my two and four year old, planning out healthy meals for my family that we’ll all enjoy and doing my best to get enough sleep. I’m excited to be involved again in this year’s AHA Heart Walk and use it as motivation to get moving even more! Dancing with your kids counts as steps, doesn't it!?!
Have a heart and help me reach my goal today!
