Barbara's story is one of resilience and gratitude.
For years, Barbara lived her life without knowing that a congenital heart defect had been silently accompanying her every step of the way. Her bicuspid aortic valve—a condition present since birth—had seemed invisible, allowing her to live freely and with only a few limitations. But as time passed, her heart began to show signs that this hidden comorbidity was something she couldn’t ignore. Unlike other health challenges that could be addressed by changing habits or losing weight, living with a bicuspid aortic valve meant facing a reality that couldn’t simply go away.
Despite the diagnosis, Barbara has embraced her journey with strength and purpose. As a Registered Nurse, she’s uniquely positioned to understand the importance of heart health—not just for herself, but for the countless lives she touches. Whether she’s teaching CPR or volunteering as a first aider, Barbara has made it her mission to share life-saving knowledge and skills with her community. Her experience has deepened her dedication to helping others and brought her even closer to the American Heart Association (AHA).
Today, Barbara walks for the AHA with a heart full of gratitude. The organization’s tireless efforts to raise awareness and fund research for heart conditions, including congenital heart defects, inspire her every day. She’s thankful not only for the strides the AHA has made but for the opportunity to give back—to walk beside others, share her story, and champion the cause that has become so personal to her.
Barbara’s journey is a testament to the power of determination, advocacy, and community. Together, she and the AHA are making every step count—for herself, for her patients, and for a future where heart health is within everyone’s reach.
