My 2021 NYC Marathon was perfect--gorgeous weather and a route filled with all my people providing their love and support. At the time, I considered a marathon a bucket list item and never saw a point in trying to replicate the accomplishment of 26.2 miles. That night after our big family celebration and as my runner's high started to kick in, I did as I always would--called my dad to recap the day. We had spoken about how cool it would be to one day complete the six major world marathons, but foolish to try to recreate such a flawless race day.
As we approach the one year anniversary of his sudden passing, the pain is still so fresh. The concept that we are doing things in Dad's honor versus with him by our sides goes completely beyond my comprehension. My reluctance to ever start training for a marathon again has been replaced with feelings of motivation and excitement. I have decided to train for this October's Chicago marathon with the aim of participating in all six. However, this time it is to connect with Dad and raise money for a charity that I have come to care about deeply. As I carry myself along this brutal healing process, I want to raise awareness about heart health.
One in three Americans will lose their life to cardiovascular disease, when sudden and fatal attacks are common. The American Heart Association believes everyone deserves the opportunity for a longer, healthier life.
The warm and absolutely incredible man Dom Valenza was lives on forever. There will never be a better role model, father, cheerleader, or best friend than him. I hope the qualities Dad saw in me to "inspire others and bring people together” are realized through this effort.
Please consider donating to help me reach the Valenza 2024 Fundraising Goal.
