Running for My Dad: My Chicago Marathon Journey
On October 12, 2025, what would have been my dad's 64th birthday, I'll be running my first marathon. When I was offerred a spot to run with the American Heart Association on my dad's birthday, it felt like a sign from him to take on this challenge I've been thinking about for a couple of years now.
When I was 11 years old, my world changed forever when my dad passed away suddenly while we were on vacation in Kauai visiting my aunt Marisa and her family for Chistmas. My dad wasn't just my father; he was my best friend and role model. From Saturday mornings on the squash courts to Sunday afternoons playing wiffle ball in my grandparent's pool - some of my most cherished memories with my dad involve being active together. My dad taught me how to keep my eye on the ball, take the T to the TD garden and get there with enough time to sing along to the Candian anthem, and most importantly, be genuinely kind to every person you meet.
A Birthday Tribute
There's something profoundly meaningful about challenging my body and spirit on this particular day. Every mile I run will be a celebration of my dad's life and the values he instilled in me. Though he can't be there at the finish line, I know he'll be with me every step of the way.
Join My Journey
Your support means the world to me as I train for these 26.2 miles. Every donation, no matter the size, helps fund the American Heart Association's vital work and honors not just my dad's memory, but all those affected by heart disease.
The American Heart Association works tirelessly to prevent other families from experiencing the loss that mine did by funding critical cardiovascular research and ensuring appropriate cardiac care—all to reduce deaths and disability from heart disease and stroke.
Thank you for being part of my journey in challenging myself and honoring my dad, Drew Stephen Hurley.
