This November, I’m taking part in the American Heart Association Beach Ride with a deeply personal reason to support its mission. After surviving a stroke, I know how suddenly life can change—and how much hope matters in the days that follow.
When my stroke happened, I didn’t recognize it for what it was. My right hand and arm felt numb, and then, during a phone conversation, I couldn’t find my words. Hurricane Helene further delayed access to care. For months, I knew something was terribly wrong without understanding why.
Before the stroke, I had spent more than 20 years as an attorney and Chief Legal Officer. Words were my livelihood and a large part of my identity. Aphasia changed that. I looked like myself, but expressing my thoughts had become a struggle. It was frightening, frustrating, and often lonely.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with essential thrombocythemia, a rare blood cancer that causes excess platelets and increases the risk of blood clots. Understanding what had happened gave me a way forward, even as I learned to live with lasting changes.
Through it all, horses have brought me comfort and purpose. My mare, Freya, helped me feel connected to myself again when so much felt unfamiliar. Time in the saddle gave me moments of peace, confidence, and joy.
My trainer, Calvin Halford, has also been an extraordinary source of inspiration. Living with ALS, he has shown me what it means to meet difficult days with faith, determination, and generosity. His example reminds me to keep moving forward and to appreciate what each day still offers.
For me, the 2026 Beach Ride is a celebration of being here—and an opportunity to help others facing heart disease and stroke. Please consider donating to the American Heart Association through my page. Your support helps advance research, education, and the work that gives families like mine hope.
Thank you for supporting my ride and for being part of my story. I am grateful to be alive, grateful for the people and horses who have helped me along the way, and grateful for the chance to give back.
