This year my Beach Ride is dedicated to my new baby cousin Evelyn Rose. She was born 9 weeks early and only weighed 3 pounds 3 ounces. She had surgery at only 6 weeks old to repair a heart defect. Let me tell you how the AHA is making a difference for babies like precious Evie.
In 1955 my Aunt Martha, Evie's great-grandme, made history as the first patient to have open heart surgery at Aultman Hospital in Canton OH when doctors repaired a defect in her heart! Two years later, her baby daughter, Diane, Evie's grandma, had the same surgery. I'm happy to say Aunt Martha, who turned 89 in September, and my cousin Diane are both active and healthy! A generation later, my niece Cortney also had surgery to repair the same heart defect. Today Cortney is Army Strong and serving our country! Research funded by the AHA helped develop and improve the surgeries that let them have active, healthy lives! Aunt Martha, Diane and Cortney all had open heart surgery, baby Evie had a device implanted into her heart via a catheter inserted into her vein. That was so much less invasive and made for an easier and shorter recovery.
