MEET MEADOW WOOD ELEMENTARY
Hello, my name is Darin and I am 5 years old. I have one sibling, my big sister Dora. I live with my mom and my sister. I have a black cat named Salem and he lives with my dad. I was born with a heart condition called Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome; this means I have half a heart. I also have Dextrocardia which means my heart is backwards. I was 6 days old when I had my first open heart surgery. They added a shunt to my heart to help my blood flow to my lungs. It made me feel very tired and I was isolated from everyone and everything because I was very sensitive. They also added a g-tube to my tummy to help me eat. It changed my life in very big ways, I must be very cautious when playing and when I am sick because any minor accident/sickness could send me to the hospital, but this has only made me stronger. Due to my condition being so serious my mommy had to dedicate her life to me to help me recover, doing this made my sister miss out on some things but my sister is so understanding and loving she’s never left my side. Now that I’m five years old and I’ve had 3 major surgeries I am stronger than I’ve ever been with the help of the pacemaker in my tummy. It makes my heart feel a lot better and fills me with energy. I take medicine every day, three in the morning and two in the evening. I love going to see my doctors because they help me feel better. When I am home, I like to do art, play with my cat and dinosaur toys as well as watch movies with my family. I want other kids like myself to know they are strong and not alone. I am grateful for A.H.A shining a light on stories like mine. It makes me feel happy to know they are teaching kids to be compassionate and understanding to children like me.
