Lauren's Second Line Team carries a profoundly personal mission for me.
We are walking, first and foremost, in loving memory of our former colleague and friend, Lauren Charles. Lauren was a vibrant leader at Leidos, a dedicated committee lead for the NoVA Women?s Network, and she captained our 2020 Heart Walk team. She was tragically taken from us when she was murdered by her husband. Our team name, "Lauren's Second Line," is a tribute to her New Orleans roots, symbolizing a joyful celebration of a life well-lived?a testament to her enduring spirit.
This fight is also deeply personal to me. I know the issues of heart disease firsthand because my mother suffered from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a condition that severely impacts the heart muscle. Witnessing her struggle showed me how critical the AHA?s work is for research and support.
It is also crucial to remember that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., often presenting differently and being misdiagnosed compared to men. By supporting the AHA, we fund critical research to close this awareness gap and save lives.
