My family's world was turned upside down in December 2024 when my husband, Brandon, died unexpectedly at the age of 41 from a widowmaker heart attack. He was active, a non-smoker, and we believed he was reasonably healthy.
As adults, life often becomes so busy with work, kids' activities, and the constant demands of everyday life that we forget to take care of ourselves. We assume we'll find the time later. Unfortunately, some things-like heart attacks-don't wait for us to slow down.
Cardiac arrest can happen anytime, anywhere, and sometimes with little or no warning. Tragically, 9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside of a hospital do not survive. My husband is one of those 9.
Healthy habits are one of the best defenses against heart disease. We can reduce risk by exercising regularly, eating healthy, not smoking, managing stress, and making sure we get adequate sleep. It's also important to visit your doctor for yearly checkups so you can monitor and manage things like cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels.
I am choosing to walk in memory of my husband, Brandon Puskarcik, to help raise awareness and support lifesaving efforts. Every dollar donated helps train more people in lifesaving CPR, fund critical research, and create more opportunities to save lives.
