In November 2025, at just 37 years old, I survived a major heart attack. Six months later, I am incredibly grateful to be participating in the 2026 Twin Cities Heart Walk on May 30th, with my family by my side.
After my heart attack, I learned that I have a hereditary genetic disorder called Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH). FH causes the body to produce dangerously high cholesterol levels because of genetics - meaning that even with healthy eating and exercise, many people with FH still need medical treatment to control their cholesterol and reduce their risk of heart disease.
I've always had a difficult time sharing personal parts of my life publicly, and I'm not very active on social media, but I feel strongly about sharing what I now know in hopes that it may help someone else before they experience something similar.
(FYI: healthpartners.com currently offers FREE genetic screening for many high-risk disorders - including FH.)
One important thing I've learned is how critical it is to truly understand what is happening inside your own body and to advocate for your health. I'm also incredibly thankful for the doctors, nurses, paramedics, and cardiac care teams who saved my life so I can hopefully spend decades more with my husband and children.
This year, I'm walking to raise awareness for FH and support lifesaving heart research and education through the American Heart Association. If you feel inclined, please consider donating or sponsoring my walk participation. Your support helps bring awareness to this lesser-known heart condition, along with hundreds of other heart disorders, and may help save lives like mine. Thank you!
